The smallest of the Canary Islands will become the first island to be fully powered by wind and water when it opens a new wind farm this summer.
Around 10,000 people live on El Hierro, the most southern of the Spanish islands, and when the wind plant is switched on it will take the strong winds that whip of the cliffs and mountains of the volcanic island and power it.

Earlier this month, Government's Energy Commission approved Belco's proposal to change the existing fixed facilities charge to a graduated facilities charge. The change, which affects residential customers, comes into effect next month. If you currently pay more than $324 for electricity each month, get ready to see your monthly bill increase by $16.50 or $42. If you currently pay less than $197 monthly, you should see your bill reduce by $8 or $18.
