HAMILTON, Bermuda, March 27, 2014 - With Spider-Man designated as the superhero ambassador for this year's global observance of Earth Hour, children in Bermuda are being invited to come to Saturday's Earth Hour activities in Hamilton dressed as their favourite superhero.

And the first 25 children who arrive at City Hall in costume will each receive a young cedar tree, donated by SOS Bermuda, a local charity whose mission is to protect the Island's open spaces.

While many of the 7,000 cities celebrating Earth Hour will have Spider-Man representatives as featured guests – Singapore will host the cast and director of the new film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – only Bermuda will boast stars from the hit Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Bermudian Rebecca Faulkenberry, fresh from her acclaimed performance as the show's female lead, has agreed to headline an evening of entertainment at City Hall. Miss Faulkenberry will be joined by her Broadway co-star Reeve Carney, who played the original Spider-Man when it opened on Broadway in June 2011.

Children attending Earth Hour will have the chance to meet Miss Faukenberry and Mr. Carney before the two stars perform on the lawn of City Hall at 7:30pm.

"One of the objectives of Earth Hour is to engage young people in the dialogue about how to protect our planet," said Gordon Johnson, Executive Director of sustainability advocacy group Greenrock, who organize Bermuda's Earth Hour. "We feel there is no better way to capture the attention and imagination of our young people than by inviting them to have some fun during Earth Hour as they explore the activities that have been organized on their behalf.

"The 25 children who receive cedar trees will play a personal role in helping to preserve and protect one of Bermuda's endemic species."

Saturday's schedule begins at 12:00pm with a Living Green Expo on the upper level of the Washington Mall and culminates with Earth Hour, when businesses and residents are encouraged to turn off their lights for sixty minutes.

During Earth Hour, members of the community are also invited to participate in a Walk of Flame through the unlit streets of Hamilton.

Walk of Flame participants are advised to bring decorated jars to hold the tea lights they will be given to illuminate their way. A $23 fee to participate in the walk covers costs and registration. Walkers can register at www.racedayworld.com.

Earth Hour is a global initiative organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) involving millions of people around the globe. The event, now in its seventh year, aims to bring the world together to celebrate and protect the environment.
