At the same time, the Bulb Swap provided the general public information on how to safely dispose CFLs and how to handle them should they break.
Over a four day period in February, the Greenrock Bulb Swap took place in three locations around Hamilton and one location in Warwick. Close to 980 individuals participated in this exchange. Close to 65% of the participants did not use CFLs in their homes.

Assuming CFLs being used are equivalent to a 60 watt regular bulb, and for 5 hours per day, the Bulb Swap would save about 164,542 kwh of energy that translates into an total annual savings of around $60,000.
Broken down, this would amount to an energy reduction of 84 kwh per CFL which equates to an annual savings of around $31 per CFL. Do the math, the more CFLs used for those lights that are on for long periods, the higher savings generated annually. Switching from traditional light bulbs to CFLs is an effective, accessible change every person can make right now to reduce energy use at home and prevent greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.
Lighting accounts for close to 20% of the average home’s energy bill. CFLs use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, last up to 10x longer and provide a quick return on investment.
Studies suggest that if every home in the U.S. replaced just one incandescent bulb with a CFL, in one year it would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 800,000 cars.
CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing – an average of 5 milligrams – about the amount that would cover the tip of a ballpoint pen. By comparison, older thermometers contain about 500 milligrams of mercury. It would take 100 CFLs to equal that amount.
