Project Outline:

In order for Elliot Primary to become a ‘Green School’ we have identified three main areas of focus:

1. Curriculum: connecting students to the environment of the school and of Bermuda in order to support and enhance environmental and general education.
2. “Growing Up Green”: linking children to their environment and to sustainable living. Building individual responsibility.
3. Facilities:
   1. To reduce the environmental impact of the school building and grounds and create a healthier environment
   2. To reduce the school’s “Carbon footprint” and energy use.
   3. To use LEED certification as an incentive for donors, and as an aspirational goal for the project (LEED: “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” is a widely recognized certification program for buildings introduced by the US Green Buildings Association.)

HELP IS WANTED IN THREE AREAS:

1. Site survey of the school: 6 volunteers needed August 20th for half a day:

What needs doing?: We need to survey the school in detail in teams of 2 or 3 people: What equipment is in each room? What condition are the walls and floor in? Do the windows open? Does the room have air-conditioning? Etc. This information will provide the basic data for use in the facilities project.

Is experience necessary?: No, we will provide all the equipment and information and a detailed briefing before we start

2. Curriculum development: Ongoing participation in the project to help with the curriculum development piece:

What needs doing?: We have identified environmental resources and lesson plans, and how to include these in the school curriculum, but we need help with sorting through the new Cambridge curriculum for the Primary school to identify where the lessons fit, and to help support the teachers.

Is experience necessary?: An education background would help.

3. Trash Audit: 4-6 volunteers needed for a couple of hours — date and time TBD:

What needs doing?: Get down and dirty! We want to categorize the school’s trash and identify how much of it can be recycled, how much could be composted, how much of it could be reduced through more creative lunch or school programs. This is Bermuda in a microcosm, learn what we really do!

Is experience necessary?: No, just enthusiasm and a willingness to deal with trash!
